Obesity and Foot and Ankle Disorders

The effect of obesity on foot and ankle pathology is multifactorial. Although the biomechanical reasons predominate, the metabolic factors are also important in surgical decision-making. Obese patients tend to have worse functional scores preoperatively and a comparable postoperative outcome can be expected. There is a high risk of surgical complications, and, therefore, it is pertinent that both patient and surgeon have good awareness of the potential risks and challenges with routine postoperative care. The emphasis on setting realistic expectations especially in the obese population cannot be stressed further and remains a cornerstone of elective foot and ankle surgery and modern orthopaedic care.
