Management Issues and Solutions

The estuaries and coastal seas of the global oceans are among the most rapidly changing coastal environments on earth, due to the extreme magnitude of the natural forcing and unprecedented human influences associated with rapid infrastructure development. This rapidly changing estuarine and coastal environment presents great management challenges as well as great research opportunities. This book has identified some key coastal management issues and offered solutions to address these urgent coastal problems. We argue that science and innovation provide a key ingredient in establishing the path toward sustainable development and management of the world’s estuaries and coasts, and offers guidance for coastal management. In addition to science, a modern and integrated coastal management framework can better equip coastal communities to respond to existing and future coastal management challenges and opportunities.
