Theoretical Approach in Related Reviews of Building Community Resilience in General and Specific Frameworks of the Book

In this chapter, global and local fundamental theories that are relevant to building resilience and participation of affected communities are reviewed and discussed. Discussion starts from a general perspective and a specific perspective for the case of flood disaster, human-social geography, sustainable livelihood development, risk reduction management, and policy measures. The understanding of building resilience to flood hazards/disasters is not a new research study for scholars in both northern and southern hemisphere nations, but I pioneer and emphasize here the importance of understanding resilience together as a single salient unit to equip flood disaster management efforts involving affected communities for the benefit of disaster management policies and building resilience practices day after day that are appropriate for conditions in the recovery stage of the community's various types of resilience assets. This perspective of understanding the scientific context based on participatory empirical research that I conducted in Malaka-Timor, Indonesia is not only for flood-affected communities there and other south hemisphere nations, but can also be emulated by north hemisphere countries experiencing flood disaster/hazard situations. A discussion of fundamental theories introducing our understanding of building resilience in an easily digestible presentation is presented in this chapter.
