Dr. Truman William Brophy (1848–1928) was a luminary in cleft lip and palate repair and a catalyst for dental education reform. He matriculated from the Pennsylvania Dental College and Rush Medical College, an achievement that established Brophy as one of the earliest dual-degree oral surgeons in the United States. In 1886, Brophy successfully performed his first cleft repair surgery. The technique was named the “Brophy Operation” and involved uniting maxillary bones with wire ligatures, followed by meticulous tissue coaptation. Despite criticisms of its traumatic nature, Brophy’s innovative technique laid the groundwork for modern cleft repair surgery. Brophy’s impact extended beyond surgical innovation.
