Born in 1924 in Waco, Texas, Dr. Robert V. Walker spent a lifetime deeply engaged in athletics and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS). His career helped define the role of the maxillofacial surgeon. Dr. Walker’s career launched with the completion of a 2-year residency in OMS at Parkland Memorial Hospital, from which he graduated in 1956. Ultimately elected as the Chief of OMS at Parkland Memorial Hospital, he fostered the integration with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, laying the foundation to establish OMS as the primary service for the management of facial trauma. The landmark study presented in this chapter outlines the healing capabilities of the mandibular condyle and treatment protocols aimed at achieving optimal form and function. Dr. Walker’s career has had a lasting influence on the field of OMS. Numerous surgeons have utilized the teachings of Dr. Walker to carve their own paths, and many maintain academic positions to this day. Briefly summarized in this chapter, Dr. Robert V.
