Dr. Robert H. Ivy was a renowned oral and plastic surgeon known for his pioneering work in the emergency treatment of maxillofacial injuries as well as the development of a multidisciplinary team approach for treatment of children with cleft lip and palate. While serving as an officer in the Medical Corps during World War I, Ivy and his colleague published a highly influential article on the appropriate treatment of patients with war injuries of the head and neck, the basic principles of which still hold true today in the treatment of patients with maxillofacial trauma. Throughout his career, he continued to educate trainees at the School of Dentistry as well as the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the fields of oral and plastic surgery including a certificate of appreciation from the War Department.
