Wartime injuries to the maxillofacial complex during World War I provided the basis for advancements in both maxillofacial and plastic surgery. Dr. Henry Percy Pickerill joined the ranks of prominent New Zealand surgeons such as Harold Gillies through his work during the war, in addition to significant contributions to reconstructive plastic surgery, dental education, and various areas of research in both basic scientific and clinical contexts. Pickerill’s short piece, “The Queen’s Hospital, Sidcup” is discussed in the context of his contributions to the fields of plastic and maxillofacial surgery.
