World War I, “The Great War,” brought to reality suffering, violence, and destruction that were new to the human experience. Trench warfare during World War I provided surgeons with new challenges in facial trauma and laid the cornerstone for modern-day oral and maxillofacial surgery. While many surgeons and procedures came to fruition as a result of the facial trauma generated during this time, Varaztad Kazanjian was one of the true pioneers. His stabilization of facial trauma using dental principles, bone grating techniques, and aseptic protocols laid the foundation for modern-day maxillofacial reconstruction.
