Articular Wounds

Misdiagnosis is a major issue with articular wounds in the emergency setting; it may lead to catastrophic complications and sequelae such as septic arthritis with subsequent painful joint destruction and ankylosis. The diagnosis may be tricky and delicate. The presence of pneumarthrosis (air in the joint) on the radiographs is pathognomonic for the diagnosis of a penetrating articular wound.
