Treatment Techniques Adopted to Developing Countries

Landfill leachate has several negative environmental effects and contaminates groundwater on a large scale. This leachate contains highly toxic contaminants such as heavy metals, solids, BOD, COD, ammonia, and TOC. Because of their versatility, pollutants cannot be treated using a single treatment technique. In fact, many treatment technologies are discussed, including physical and chemical processes, biological and advanced oxidation treatments. By providing an updated overview of the various alternatives that have been successfully applied in this field, this chapter highlights the benefits and drawbacks of these technologies for landfill leachate treatment in developed countries. More research should be done to improve landfill leachate treatment in order to maximize removal performance.
