Filtration Technique for Leachate Using Recycled Coarse Aggregate

Landfill is a place where wastes such as degradable and non-degradable, hazardous and non-hazardous wastes are disposed. One of the important factors that should be considered in a landfill is leachate segregation and the covers that are used to protect the ground from contamination. Recycled Coarse Aggregate (RCA) which is a byproduct of the construction and demolition waste (C&D) was studied to generate an adsorbent characteristic with the help of adsorbents with different pilot studies. A pilot study was carried out with the RCA sample having a size of 6 mm, paper pulp, adsorbents and the unfiltered leachate. The performance of RCA was observed for a period of over 2 weeks. The research work shows the performance of various adsorbents at different proportions for turbidity and color and its capacity to change from acidic nature to basic. The study mainly focusses on treating the leachate with RCA and adsorbent and focus on using it as a liner in landfill. Further studies are to be conducted to determine the changes in other parameters of the leachate that is collected.
