The Internet of Things and Its Impact on the Platformization of Journalism

This chapter looks at a few trends and innovations characteristic of a Fourth Industrial Revolution, one based on digital technologies and a transition to new systems in the current platformization of society and journalism. In this chapter we point out opportunities that the Internet of Things (IoT) gives journalism, such as new forms of narratives and the public being closer to the events, as well as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), the metaverse, or the use of drones, which are expanding with the Internet of Things and Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) of 5G technology (speed, low latency, and reliability) through digital mobile devices. We conducted methodological, bibliographical, and documentary research to point out and exemplify innovations that use the IoT, and we conducted exploratory research on empirical cases of the Internet of Things in journalism.
