Overtourism: A Potential Outcome in Contemporary Tourism—Causes, Solutions, and Management Challenges

This chapter reviews causes of and solutions to overtourism. Solutions include a suite of tools and management and development approaches for communities and scholars to moderate crowding and other negative impacts from overtourism. Many of these solutions are grounded in sustainability and resilient community approaches, as well as destination capacity management. An overtourism ecosystem model integrates from concepts to solutions with a keen focus on stakeholders. Developing a tourism plan is recommended as a roadmap for communities to identify, manage, and mitigate overtourism.
