It is found that there is a significant difference between the frequency distribution of English modal verbs used by English learners in written language and that of English native speakers, that is, the semantic acquisition of modal verbs by college English learners is not authentic. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the choice tendency, semantic choice and usage of typical sentence patterns of modal verbs by Chinese English learners, and to analyze the empirical research methods of the usage characteristics of modal verbs.
