Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been advancing rapidly in recent years, and image processing has played a crucial role in this development. Image segmentation is a crucial task in computer vision with numerous applications across various domains such as medical imaging, autonomous vehicles, satellite imagery analysis, and more. With the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning techniques, the field of image segmentation has witnessed significant progress in recent years. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the role of image processing in advancing AI. The analysis encompasses various aspects of image segmentation, including semantic segmentation, instance segmentation, and panoptic segmentation, elucidating their differences, strengths, and weaknesses.
