Tourist Perspectives on the Use of Electric Cars in Game Lodges in Sub-Saharan Africa

Electric cars present a novel technology used to reduce the carbon footprint in tourism destinations. However, there is a paucity of studies that interrogate the tourist experience with this innovation. This study examines tourists’ perceptions of using electric cars for tourism in game lodges within wildlife-protected areas in sub-Saharan Africa. Thematic analysis was used to examine reviews from trip advisor and comments on the websites of seven selected game lodges in sub-Saharan Africa that have embraced the concept. The study revealed that the electric vehicles accorded the tourists memorable and unique experiences, such as enjoying silent driving experiences and getting closer to the wildlife. Tourists also perceived them as environment-friendly, progressive, innovative, high-value tourist attractions that encouraged revisits. On the other hand, it emerged that charging infrastructure, range anxiety, and potential off-road driving remain challenges for tourism destinations. The study concluded that electric cars for the African Safari are a best practice that should be replicated. It recommends policy regulation and tailor-made solutions to charge and range concerns. The study contributes to knowledge and practice on the use of electric vehicles from the demand side of tourism in the context of sub-Saharan Africa.
