Despite notable strides in the sustainable manufacturing of industrial ceramics, craft ceramic production continues to rely on resource-intensive methods that contribute to environmental pollution. This systematic critical review examines the responses of practitioners, researchers, and educators who are seeking solutions to mitigate the environmental impact of craft ceramics. It explores their proposed solutions and evaluates the scope, focus, and methodologies employed in discussing sustainability in literature. The study screened 115 and fully reviewed 84 English-language specialist books, articles, and blogs, revealing key gaps and weaknesses in over two decades of academic and specialist discourse. While acknowledging the diverse dimensions of sustainability, the review specifically concentrates on “environmental sustainability” aiming to minimise waste, pollution and the depletion of natural resources. Through thematic analysis, it becomes apparent that the literature predominantly discusses technologies developed by craft ceramicists for their peers, with limited quantitative exploration of their environmental impacts throughout the production phases, including sourcing, processing, firing and distribution. Given the absence of authoritative scientific guidance on sustainable craft ceramics, this study clusters and reviews existing solutions in light of ethnographic knowledge of studio production and insights from the ceramic industry. The ensuing discussion highlights contemporary challenges faced by ceramicists, identifies knowledge gaps, and outlines a research agenda to promote sustainable practices.
