Pathology
摘要
This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the current and historical trends of physician workforce diversity in the field of pathology. A contemporary analysis of pathology trainee and workforce diversity trends highlight the development and sustainment of parity in female trainee representation. The historical gap between the overall proportions of underrepresented minority (URM), specifically Black and Hispanic, pathology trainees when compared to their representation in the total graduate medical education (GME) pool has narrowed. However, profound disparities in the representation of Indigenous Peoples remain and little data exist regarding other marginalized and underrepresented demographic groups in pathology. Moreover, disparities for female and URM trainees persist and increase at senior pathology faculty ranks and pathology leadership positions. Understanding the specific opportunities for increasing and supporting pathology trainee and workforce diversity provides a framework to intervene strategically and realize health equity for pathology’s broad and diverse patient population.
