Neurological Surgery

Despite technological advancements in the field of neurosurgery, the demographics of the neurosurgical workforce have remained largely unchanged for decades. Diversification of the field is paramount to fostering an environment that caters to the growing diverse patient population in the United States. Moreover, studies have shown that diversity is the most rational pursuit for optimal growth and patient-centered healthcare equity. Barriers to these advancements involve a lack of mentorship, shared buy-in, and pathway programs targeting under-represented in medicine (URiM) minorities. While some progress has been made in the recognition of said issues, there remains a need for actionable solutions to advance the field as it pertains to diversity and inclusion. Here, we highlight solutions, such as acknowledging the complexities of diversity and establishing organizations and opportunities to recruit and retain under-represented individuals into the field of neurosurgery.
