Dermatology

This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the trends in physician workforce diversity in the field of dermatology. Our review highlights the lack of diversity present in the field, as Black and Latinx dermatologists are underrepresented among residents, practicing physicians, and academic faculty, and shows that this disparity has stayed stagnant over several decades. Our analysis also shows a reduction in racial diversity among dermatologists as they transition from resident to attending or academic faculty. Gender diversity and inclusion is also explored. While women comprise the majority of dermatologists in all categories, they are less likely to receive funding or serve in leadership roles such as department chair. Extremely limited numbers of dermatologists of American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander backgrounds restrict the assessment of these populations over time. This chapter highlights the need for continued and expanded efforts in the field of dermatology to improve physician workforce diversity to ensure a workforce that is reflective of the increasingly diverse population it serves.
