Animal Babel

This original short play, first published in Japanese in 2013, appears here in English translation. In a world where humans have gone extinct, the animals gather to make plans. They need organization, they need buildings. What follows are fresh permutations on compelling themes often encountered in Tawada’s work: the nature of animal and human; the politics of societies; the vagaries of language; and, importantly, the varieties of misunderstanding.
