Harmonising Technology and Humanity Through Ubuntu

The ethical foundations of technology development and integration in Africa urgently require rethinking. Mainstream innovation paradigms, shaped by Western individualism and instrumental rationality, often contradict indigenous African values of communal solidarity, social welfare, and ecological harmony. This chapter argues that Ubuntu philosophy, rooted in sub-Saharan cultures, offers a humanistic framework to guide technology trajectories for collective empowerment and social justice. Ubuntu’s relational ethics emphasises that our shared humanity is realised through compassionate social bonds and cooperative actions, not atomistic self-interest. This contrasts with dominant assumptions of technological individualism. The chapter analyses agricultural, health and digital innovation case studies to highlight Ubuntu’s transformative potential. Participatory, contextual approaches grounded in local knowledge and values are imperative. Ubuntu’s communitarian wisdom demands technology governance that serves collective well-being, not merely efficiency or profit. Inclusive dialogue, cooperative development models, and reforms to research and business ecosystems guided by Ubuntu principles are vital. Mainstreaming Ubuntu ethics is essential to consciously steer innovation in inhumane, ecologically sustainable directions on Africa’s terms.
