Decoding the Digital Revolution

  • Yamikani Ndasauka

摘要

This chapter analyses Africa’s technology adoption patterns and outcomes, examining multifaceted drivers, uneven diffusion, developmental impacts, and constraints through an interdisciplinary lens. It highlights the relation of social, economic, cultural, and structural factors shaping technology integration pathways, reflecting the availability of localised resources, user attitudes, contextual relevance, and infrastructure considerations. The chapter discusses the emergence of pronounced digital divides along gender, income, rural-urban, and regional lines and the mix of intended benefits and unintended consequences across economic, socio-cultural, ethical, and environmental dimensions. It explores additional factors influencing diffusion patterns, such as international trade, frugal innovations, digital platforms, and the sharing economy. The chapter examines the impacts of e-commerce, automation, and social media, emphasising the need for inclusive innovation strategies and proactive governance. The chapter concludes by arguing for cooperative action among stakeholders to realise the full potential of technologies resonating with Africa's diverse realities, shifting from unreflective transfer to reflective co-creation for equitable advancement.
