Introduction

In this introduction, we describe the historical background and motivation for the classification of maximal solvable subgroups. We prove Jordan’s result which describes how the classification of maximal solvable subgroups of symmetric groups reduces to the classification of maximal irreducible solvable subgroups of \(\operatorname {GL}_n(p)\) , for p prime.
