Seismic Upgradation of Moment Resisting Frame Structures Using Buckling-Inhibited Shear Yielding Dampers
摘要
Seismic response control of structures has been studied to minimize damage and economic losses for many years now. Researchers have developed different types of supplemental energy dissipation devices over the period. An energy dissipation damper based on the shear yielding of the buckling-inhibited plates was developed recently. The developed dampers utilize thin plates for the core energy dissipator elements and harness energy dissipation potential due to the buckling-inhibition mechanism. This study explores the seismic upgradation of the moment-resisting frame (MRF) structures using these dampers. The seismic performance of the MRF has been assessed numerically on the OpenSees platform. Seismic performance has been evaluated for low-rise to mid-rise frame structures numerically. Modeled frames are subjected to a series of ground motions for conducting non-linear time history analysis. The main parameters studied are inter-story drift, hinge mechanism, and roof displacement response. Analysis results are discussed in reference to the provisions given in Indian Standards. It is found that due to the superior cyclic behavior of the buckling-inhibited shear-yielding dampers, the seismic performance of the MRFs can be improved significantly. Thus, the developed dampers are suitable for retrofitting the MRF structure and for new MRF construction.
