摘要

The world of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) has witnessed many innovations in products and services that have the potential to enhance communication for those with severe speech, language and literacy difficulties. One significant trend recently is the integration of generative artificial intelligence in AAC applications with the aim of improving communication interactions, as well as tailoring experiences to individual preferences. Additionally, the increase in cloud-based AAC services and the use of mobile technologies has allowed for the synchronization of communication profiles and results across multiple devices and settings. These approaches help to ensure consistent experience regardless of the platform or language as well as illustrating how concepts around free open licenses can enhance access. Remote support, interactive assessment and activities, such as aided customization of communication tools has provided families and carers with more autonomy in their use and choices of AAC systems. This in turn has brought person-centered technology based AAC to the fore. This Special Thematic Session showcases all these innovations and encompasses many state-of-the-art techniques.
