New Discoveries in Toxins from Gram Negative Bacteria Vibrio cholerae

Cholera is a severe waterborne disease that impacts and claims the lives of millions of individuals annually in developing nations. It constitutes a multifaceted health, social, and economic issue, as well as a significant public health challenge in countries worldwide. The causative agent is Vibrio cholerae, a curvilinear, non-spore-forming, gram-negative bacillus that proliferates in various aquatic environments globally. These bacteria are categorized based on surface antigens into approximately 206 serogroups. Encapsulated V. cholerae O139 and unencapsulated V. cholerae O1 serogroups are responsible for cholera epidemics and pandemics. The primary virulence factors of toxigenic Vibrio strains are cholera toxin (CT) and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP), which cause the disease’s principal symptom, secretory diarrhea, by initiating a signaling pathway in the small intestine. TCP is a type IV pilus required for V. cholerae strains to colonize the host’s intestine. Cholera remains a significant health issue in numerous impoverished regions worldwide, where overcrowding, poverty, and inadequate water and sanitation facilities contribute to increased disease outbreak rates.
