We begin with the historical background of high-speed monohull craft, with developments in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The geometry of displacement, semi-planing, and planing craft is outlined with some derivatives. Development over the last half century is summarized together with examples. Finally, the approach to studying hydrodynamics and design is discussed and presented in succeeding chapters.
