Non-obstetric Surgery in Pregnancy

Patients more than 16 weeks gestation are considered high aspiration risk regardless of NPO status. Rapid sequence induction is the recommended plan to secure the airway for non-obstetric surgery for pregnant patients with great precaution taken for risk of aspiration and increased risk of difficult airway. Medically necessary surgery should never be denied regardless of trimester although elective surgery can be delayed until after delivery.
