Training and Continuing Education in Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital Settings

Inpatient psychiatry units (IPUs) are a cornerstone of training for psychiatry residents and fellows, and many more disciplines are increasingly having trainees at multiple levels train on these units. Additionally, staff will bring varying levels of past experience in the field, and IPUs will need to provide both initial orientation as well as ongoing training and refresher courses for all staff. This chapter will focus on training considerations, including how trainees are embedded into care, expectations for trainees, and how IPUs provide orientation and ongoing training and education to all staff to ensure competence.
