Challenges with Alternatives to Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitalization

Though inpatient psychiatric hospitalization (IPH) is a necessary component of the continuum of mental health care, and can be a lifesaving intervention, there are also potential drawbacks to IPH. Clinicians must carefully weigh the potential risks, benefits, and alternatives of IPH for each patient. This chapter explores alternatives to IPH and factors to consider when evaluating options for patients, including existing evidence base and practical considerations for these alternatives. A case example is used to illustrate key concepts.
