Advocacy and Leadership

This chapter provides an overview of advocacy and leadership in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in neurology. It discusses the role of government, including both federal agencies and legislative processes, as well as state and local government, responsibilities and opportunities. It then elaborates on the role of medical organizations and medical journals in advocating and creating programs to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion for both neurologists and neurological patients. The final section focuses on foundations of leadership and the developmental journey of leadership in individuals in advocating for DEI. Interspersed are suggestions and examples to foster discussion and incorporation of DEI in both diversification of the neurology workforce and the practice of neurological patient care.
