Training and Education
摘要
Our physician workforce and leadership in neurology do not mirror the diversity of the patient population in race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Nonetheless, efforts to increase diversity in neurology continue to make significant progress at various stages, from premedical to post-medical training. Here, we present such successful efforts, focusing on the tripartite model of research, education, and clinical care, at the following levels of education: pre-college, college, medical school, residency, fellowship, faculty, staff, and departments at large. These efforts include programs that offer research opportunities and funding for underrepresented high school and undergraduates, along with mentorship and clinical experiences, and the institution of diversity officers by the American Academy of Neurology. Our objective here is for these programs to serve as current models of diversity, equity, and inclusion, for all institutions to implement and improve upon for a more diverse neurology workforce.
