Energy Flow and Magma Generation

  • John A. Whitehead

摘要

Energy in the Earth can rise from deeper levels in the mantle where either excess temperature or compositional variations cause ascent to the surface. These upwellings are generally circular and localized and are often associated with magma generation and volcanism. The mechanics of localization is reviewed for either lower or higher viscosity rising fluid. The energy budgets of spreading centers, hotspots, and island arc volcanos are presented.
