Multiple Aspects Inclusion of Smart and Adaptive Robots in the Event of Disasters

Climate changes bring new challenges in many regions. Islands are lately at a higher risk, affected by rising sea levels, fire, storms and heavy rainfall followed by flooding and land loss are likely. This kind of disasters tend to increase and to respond swift and adequately, large number of personnel is often needed, especially connected with the health sector. In general, islands as isolated location quickly create a problem that cannot be overcome. One would have to rely on the on-site support personnel, but typically, they may not be available in sufficient numbers. In such a situation, the research in smart and adaptive robotic solutions, including Cobots might be an alternative, as humans’ assistants, emotion-free, fearless, and tireless used 24/7. This paper addresses the question of research approach in robotics considering legal, technical and economic aspects regarding how far the use of assistive robotics, deployed at secure locations, can potentially improve the management short and long time after a disaster.
