Rights of the LGBTQ Community: Between the Universal Values Model and Islamic Moral Values Model

Arguably LGBTQ is the most contentious issue of the last decade. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ full support for the LGBTQ rights movement is undoubtedly clear and vocal. After expressing his deep concern for LGBTQ rights in an African nation that imposes legal action against the community and their sexual behavior including homosexuality and groups associated with them, related parties have initiated further efforts to abolish laws that discriminate against LGBTQ with slogans such as ‘Spreading Love’ and ‘Annihilate Hatred and Discrimination’. The argument put forward by the UN Secretary-General and his committee that homosexuality is a part of spreading love and is morally sound has been used as an argument by the proponents of LGBTQ. Such campaigns could be seen manifested in various institutions and movements that share the same objectives and agendas to rationalize LGBTQ behavior by inventing it as morally good. This paper provides insights and evaluates the intellectual arguments supporting and opposing the recognition of LGBTQ. Their sexual behavior such as homosexuality is evaluated against qualitative analysis of the concept of morality, universalism, and Islamic viewpoint regarding LGBTQ and their orientations.
