Greener Technologies for Establishing Restraint Over Microplastic Pollution

Microplastics (MPs), typically smaller than 5 millimeters, are found in many ecosystems, posing a major environmental threat. Small beads, tiny fibers, and shards are just a few of the different forms that MPs may acquire. Globally, MPs have been observed in several settings, including disconnected polar regions and the deepest ocean trenches. Microplastic contamination in both marine and terrestrial ecosystems leads them to incorporate the food chain, impacting gastrointestinal effects, immune toxicity, endocrine disruption, and genotoxic effects on the health of all living creatures. Some techniques and innovations are being assessed to halt and minimize microplastic pollution. Approaches such as filtering or sieving, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, micro-Raman imaging, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy are involved in assessing the amount and concentration of environmental microplastics. The MPs are separated and recycled using various mechanical and physical techniques, including flotation, gravity separation, sensor-based sorting, electrostatic separation, and magnetic density separation, in addition to chemical remediations like pyrolysis and dissolution. However, these methods cause toxic emissions into the ecosystem and imply the release of inorganic components as by-products. Greener technologies play a vital role as they lower carbon emissions and environmental damage while eliminating micropollutants. Considering the environmental sustainability, reduced ecological harm, and long-term viability, greener technologies are favored more in the current era, including biodegradation of microplastics (photodegradation), biofloc technologies, photocatalysis, and manufacturing of bioplastics. Adopting them is essential to promoting a sustainable future, protecting the environment, and lessening the effects of anthropogenic interventions on the planet’s ecological balance.
