A Theoretical Framework for Reconceiving Agricultural Markets

This chapter presents key elements that are important for a theoretical framework on how to evaluate and reform the operation of agricultural markets. Building from the literature on degrowth, I discuss this theoretical orientation’s key points and also highlight its shortcomings concerning agriculture. I then present the different ways growth has been discussed within the context of production agriculture over time, which leads me through our current moment of neoliberalism. I end with an exploration of the democratic potential of economic planning and my concept of market democracy.
