People with HIV type 1 are more susceptible to develop cancer, such as Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cervical cancer, and other cancers associated with chronic viral infections. However, not much has been explored regarding the direct effect of HIV-derived proteins and miRNAs that have an oncogenic effect over close cells via the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to oxidative damage of DNA. Among those proteins gp120, Nef, Tat, and RT will be considered in this section. It is necessary to understand the role of endothelial microvesicles (EV), which in combination with those proteins could work as markers for endothelial dysfunction and, therefore, a predictor for cancer.
