Epigenetic Changes Induced by Infectious Agents in Cancer

Epigenetic abnormalities play a major role in the development and progression of several types of human cancer. It is known that infectious agents can cause cancer via epigenetic modifications; however, the mechanism by which they can induce this pathophysiological condition remains unclear. Today, nearly 13% of new cancer cases (worldwide) are attributable to infectious agents. To understand how infectious agents can regulate epigenetic modifications associated with cancer, it is necessary to explore current molecular technologies, such as the single-cell perspective, to unravel the epigenetic landscape of cancer, generating (epi)genome profiles and (epi)markers for cancer that could be used for early detection and design of cancer therapies.
