The Development of a Specific Nanofiber Bioreceptor for Bacterial Detection

Today, after the spread of the COVID-19 disease, sensitive real-time environment monitoring is crucial for fast and reliable diagnostics. High-quality devices such as biosensors ensure the mentioned reliability and sensitivity. Moreover, by integrating nanomaterials into the biosensor structure, it is possible to significantly increase the sensitivity and specificity of the device. Nanofiber biosensors, where functionalized electrospun nanofibers make the bioreceptor, have become very attractive biosensing tools in today's biomedicine. This paper presents the development of a polyacrylonitrile nanofiber bioreceptor functionalized with antibodies against bacterial antigens for specific interception of bacterial cells directly from the air. The obtained data shows the functionalization's significance for increasing the capture ability. Creating such a system opens the door to developing an inexpensive, fast, and ultrasensitive bionanosensor for bacterial pollution detection.
