摘要
The environmental, economic, social, and public health consequences of mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia will be presented. The Central Appalachians have a strong historical identification with coal, and the challenges and opportunities in transitioning away from coal in this context will be critically examined. Organizations in the region working to develop sustainable economic alternatives to coal mining will be highlighted, and ideas for promoting the transition will be presented.
