Performance Evaluation of LoRa in a Linear Deployment Scenario

The Internet of Things (IoT) has become an essential daily field. This is mainly because of the advances in digital technologies, miniaturization, the reduced cost of devices, and wireless connectivity. LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technologies such as LoRa provide effective connectivity solutions for IoT applications deployed in vast areas. Indeed, they offer a long transmission range and low energy consumption. LoRa is ideal for monitoring pipelines, railway infrastructures, roads, borders, etc., which have linear topology. This article aims to study the coverage and connectivity of a LoRa network in the context of a linear deployment to provide a basis for exploring a border surveillance application in the Lower Casamance region of southern Senegal in West Africa. A deployment method for LoRa nodes is proposed to achieve complete coverage and connectivity. An analytical study is accomplished based on the transmission success probability of a given Lora node. Using Omnetpp, through Flora, we simulate different values of the parameters on which the probability of success depends to analyze their impact.
