It was in reaction to the Thirty Years’ War that Benedictus de Spinoza, Samuel von Pufendorf, and John Locke advocated religious toleration, linking this to Reason, Morality, individual rights, and liberty. By defending individual rights in the religious sphere and in conscience, they opened the gates to the European Enlightenment.
