Quantifying the Impact of Urban Expansion on Land Resources Using the Land Resource Impact Assessment Framework: A Case Study of Aligarh City, India

This paper aims to assess the changes in land use and land cover caused by the urban expansionUrban expansion in one of the rapidly growing urban centers in Western Uttar Pradesh. The prime objective of the research is to evaluate the impact of urban expansionUrban expansion and urban development on the land resourcesLand resource in the urban fringe of Aligarh city using seven Land ResourceLand resource Impact AssessmentImpact assessment (LRIA) Indicators. The Land ResourceLand resource Impact AssessmentImpact assessment (LRIA) is a framework that analytically examines the per capita consumption of land due to urban expansionUrban expansion and resultant new development by integrating demographic data. The study has been carried out in the GISGIS environment incorporating satellite and analog maps of different times with population data of similar census periods. The results show a significant increase in urban built-up (307.3% increase) during 1980–2018. The LRIA reveals urban expansionUrban expansion in Aligarh city has consumed 179.73 ha per annum during 1980–2000 and 293.35 ha per year during 2000–2018. When integrated with population change, the per capita consumption of land to new urban growth was 103.23 m2 during 1980–2000 and 180.17 m2 during 2000–2018.
