From Conventional to Emerging Ammonia Production Technologies

Chemicals are the foundation of modern society. Nowadays, most useful base chemicals (e.g., hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, olefins, etc.) that are building blocks of everyday products (i.e., plastics, fertilizers, clothes, or cosmetics) are still produced from fossil feedstocks, mainly oil and natural gas. Ammonia (NH3) is one of the most critical chemicals in modern society, with an annual production of approximately 183 Mt, primarily used as a key component in fertilizers, supporting the global food supply. Beyond its role in agriculture, ammonia serves as a refrigerant and a chemical feedstock in various industries. Historically explored as a fuel, its application was limited by the availability of cheaper fossil resources. However, renewed interest positions ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel alternative for transportation and power generation, as well as an efficient hydrogen carrier. The transition to green ammonia production is essential to reduce the high carbon footprint of conventional methods, which rely on fossil feedstocks. Green ammonia offers a pathway to decarbonizing key sectors. Future success depends on fulfilling key criteria such as cost-effectiveness, safety, and carbon neutrality. As hydrogen is expected to meet 20% of global energy demand by 2050, the demand for ammonia is likely to rise, with industry players already planning green ammonia projects. If scaled effectively, ammonia could become a cornerstone of the low-carbon economy, replacing significant portions of fossil fuel consumption.
