The West, the Stranger, and the Guest

This chapter offers an examination of the evolving relationship between the West and the Other, tracking its various stages from the critiques of Western capitalism and imperialism that emerged amidst the antagonistic culture of the 1960s–1970s, to the present-day apologia of dominant Occidentalism in the era of globalization. The study highlights the Westernism that has been compelled to confront the challenge posed by the foreigner, whose social, religious, and cultural differences represent a profound diversity. The current moment demands an honest reckoning with the historical and contemporary power dynamics that have shaped the West’s relationship with the Other and an exploration of ways in which this relationship might be transformed into one that recognizes and values the richness of cultural difference. This essay aims to contribute to this crucial conversation by offering a nuanced analysis of the complex and evolving dynamics at play in the Western-Other relationship.
