Waterlogging Susceptibility Zone Assessment in Kolkata by the Flow Accumulation Method
摘要
Urban waterlogging refers to the phenomenon when there is a rainstorm or short time heavy rain, which surpasses the capacity of the urban drainage system. Due to the absence of a properly planned drainage system, urban are facing waterlogging conditions for heavy rainfall. Rainfall irregularities inundate more waterlogging conditions. Waterlogged roads not only lead to traffic snarls but can also affect health and safety, as it can increase the risk of fatal accidents, skidding, damage to vehicle engines, damage to properties, etc. Kolkata city has been chosen for this study. Here, flow accumulation is used to determine the waterlogging point. The digital elevation model (DEM) can be used to gradient for any spot on the ground surface. Various studies have used the computational hydrodynamics (CHD) base technique to determine the direction and gradient of various spots in a hilly area. The gradient determination of Kolkata is very complicated due to its deltaic phenomena. Determination of the runoff, subsequent flow accumulation, and waterlogging areas of Kolkata is the prime objective of this chapter. On the digital elevation model (DEM) map of Kolkata, 300 m × 300 m grid sizes are used to calculate the threshold value of surface runoff patterns using a D8 algorithm. After computing the gradient, the surface runoff direction or pattern is traced which helps to determine or frame the waterlogged susceptible zone in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Based on the threshold value, five types of pour points are detected, i.e. very small pour points (6–14), small pour points (15–24), Medium Pour Points (25–35), large pour points (36–51) and very large pour points (Above 51). Large to very large pour points assist near the eastern and southern segments of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Propensity based on waterlogging conditions is also pronounced by the distance from the canal and the distance from the pumping station. Roads near Cossipur, College Street, and Garden reach MG Road are experiencing moderate to high vulnerable conditions.
