Benign Neutrophilic Disorders

Neutrophils are the most common type of white blood cells in the human body. These cells play a crucial role in innate immunity in response to infections, injuries, and other threats to the body’s well-being. Neutrophilic disorders, both benign and malignant, encompass a wide range of conditions characterized by abnormalities in neutrophil counts. Benign conditions leading to neutrophilia include infections, medications, stress, and tissue damage, while neutropenia can be caused by viral infections, medications, autoimmune diseases, and nutritional deficiencies. The diagnostic approach involves clinical history, physical examination, complete blood count, peripheral blood smear review and molecular study. Management of benign neutrophilic disorders includes addressing the underlying cause, such as discontinuing causative medications, treating infections. For severe congenital neutropenia, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are considered. While many cases are transient that can be resolved spontaneously, some conditions associated with malignancies or chronic inflammatory diseases may have a more guarded prognosis.
