End-to-Side Carotid Bypass in Rat Using a Femoral Artery Graft

This chapter highlights the key points of performing an end-to-side anastomosis in bypass surgeries. Bypass procedures are indispensable in neurosurgery, addressing complex aneurysms and hypoperfusion syndromes like moyamoya disease or arterial stenosis. This technique finds application as well in cardiovascular surgery to facilitate the bypass of occluded coronary arteries, in some reconstructive microsurgery cases, or in vascular surgery to aid in restoring blood flow in peripheral arterial diseases. The procedure begins with dissecting the femoral region to harvest the femoral artery and then dissecting and preparing the recipient carotid artery. Planning the arteriotomy is crucial, as vessel diameter and anatomical circumstances must be considered. Two end-to-side anastomoses are constructed using a simple interrupted suture technique. After completing the anastomoses and restoring blood flow, meticulous suturing is essential to prevent thrombosis. This exercise combines multiple techniques, simulating clinical applications in high-flow vessels.
